01Why Traders Run MT4 and MT5 on a VPS

An Expert Advisor has one hard requirement: the machine running it must be awake. If MetaTrader closes, your EA stops. It does not matter how good the logic is.

Your home computer fails that requirement constantly. It sleeps when you leave it. Your Wi-Fi drops. Your power flickers. Windows decides to install updates and restarts itself at 3am. Every one of those is a stretch of time where your EA is not watching the market — and if you are holding an open position, it is exactly the moment you cannot manage it.

A VPS moves the problem somewhere else. It is a computer in a datacentre with redundant power, redundant network and a team whose job is keeping it up. You connect to it over Remote Desktop when you want to look. The rest of the time it simply keeps running.

02What Actually Matters (and What Is Just Marketing)

The Forex VPS market has a lot of vocabulary designed to make a standard Windows server sound specialised. Here is what genuinely affects whether your EA trades correctly.

Notice that uptime is top of the list and also the one thing no provider can sell you with a badge. And notice a detail almost nobody mentions: when a VPS reboots, MT4 and MT5 do not start themselves again. A provider with perfect uptime still stops your trading after a reboot unless you configure autostart. Section 07 shows how.

03How Much RAM and Disk Do You Actually Need?

A single MT4 terminal sitting idle uses somewhere between 150MB and 300MB of memory. That number is almost irrelevant, because the terminal is the smallest thing on the machine. Windows is the biggest.

On disk, be generous. MetaTrader downloads history for every symbol and timeframe you open, and it keeps every tick. A trader running a handful of pairs will pass 10GB in history and logs sooner than they expect, and Windows wants room to update itself on top of that.

04What a Forex VPS Really Costs

MetaTrader serves something over 80% of the retail forex market, and that has created a cottage industry of providers who take ordinary Windows hosting, add the word “Forex”, and multiply the price. That is not a cynical reading — it is what the price list shows.

Specialised Forex VPS plans commonly run $10 to $30 per month, every month, and the low-latency ones go higher. Meanwhile a perfectly capable cloud VPS with 4GB of RAM costs somewhere between $5 and $12.

The difference buys you two things. Decide honestly whether you need either:

• Proximity to your broker’s datacentre — real, and worth paying for if your strategy is latency sensitive.
• A support desk that understands MetaTrader — real, and worth something if you would rather not manage a server yourself.

If you trade on higher timeframes and you are comfortable running your own machine, you are paying the Forex tax for nothing. The alternative is to take a cheap VPS from any cloud provider and put Windows on it yourself.

The right-hand column is honest about the trade-off: you do the setup once, and in exchange you stop paying a monthly premium for something that is Windows with a label on it.

05How to Put Windows on a Cheap VPS

Here is the part nobody explains: most cheap providers do not sell Windows at all. DigitalOcean, Linode, Hetzner and Contabo all hand you Linux. The ones that do offer Windows, such as Vultr, charge a licence on top and often restrict you to Server editions.

The old workaround was to boot into rescue mode, mount an ISO and fight the console until Windows finally came up — an afternoon of work that usually ended in failure. That is what OS Installer replaces.

06Choosing a Location Close to Your Broker

This is the one decision a specialised provider makes for you, and the one you have to make yourself if you go the cheap route. It is also where most traders overspend.

Does latency matter for your strategy?

Be honest with yourself. If your EA acts on candle closes, on H1 or H4 signals, or on end-of-day levels, then a 2ms connection and a 40ms connection produce the same trades. You are not competing on speed.

It matters if you scalp, if you react to individual ticks, or if your broker’s spreads widen fast enough that a few milliseconds changes your fill. In that case proximity is worth real money, and a specialised provider near your broker is the right answer.

Finding where your broker actually is

The broker’s server location is not always on their website. Check the server name shown in your MetaTrader login window, then look at the broker’s own documentation — most publish which facility they run from. The common ones are London (LD4), New York (NY4), Frankfurt (FR2) and Tokyo (TY3).

Test before you buy

Once you have a server, measure instead of assuming. From the VPS, ping your broker’s trade server and run a traceroute to see the path. Every cloud provider publishes test IPs and speed-test files per region, so you can check the distance from a candidate region before you commit to it.

07After the Install: The Settings That Actually Matter

You have Windows running and RDP working. These are the changes that separate a VPS that trades while you sleep from one that quietly stopped three weeks ago.

Stop Windows from sleeping

This is the single most important setting, and it is easy to miss because servers do not ship with a desktop power plan. Set the power plan to High performance and set “Put the computer to sleep” to Never. A Windows machine that sleeps is a machine where your EA is not trading.

Stop Windows Update from restarting at random

Windows will restart itself for updates when it decides to. Set active hours generously, or schedule updates for a window you choose. A reboot is survivable — if you have done the next step.

Make MetaTrader start itself after a reboot

MT4 and MT5 do not relaunch on their own. Put a shortcut to your terminal in the Windows startup folder, or create a scheduled task that runs at logon. This is what turns “the server came back up” into “the EA came back up”.

Turn on automated trading and leave it alone

In MetaTrader, enable Allow automated trading and confirm your EA is attached to the right chart with the smiley face in the corner. Closing the RDP window does not stop the terminal — it keeps running on the server. Only a logoff or a shutdown would.

Add Defender exclusions

Windows Defender scanning MetaTrader’s history files costs you performance for no benefit. Add the MT4 and MT5 data folders to the exclusion list.

Close what you do not need

Change the root password on the server — a fresh install prints it in the terminal, and it is worth rotating. Keep RDP behind a strong password, and if your provider offers a firewall, only leave the ports you actually use open.

Take a snapshot once it works

When everything is configured and your EA is running, snapshot the server. That snapshot is your fallback, and it is the difference between a five-minute recovery and rebuilding from scratch at the worst possible moment.
